Cimarron: A Collector’s Edition Bound by Ice and Story
A mythical journey of self-discovery — told through the lens of explorer Dwayne Fields, and hand-bound with fabric that survived the Arctic.
A Story About Running Wild — and Coming Home
Dwayne Fields became the first Black Briton to walk to the Magnetic North Pole but Cimarron isn’t about that expedition. It’s about what it means to run, to break free, and to discover your wild self.
Told through a fictionalised lens, Cimarron is a fantastical graphic novel that draws on the emotional truth of Dwayne’s life. From growing up in inner-city London to finding silence, survival, and transformation in the natural world. Part adventure, part mythology, part reckoning, it’s a vivid and powerful story about escaping the paths set for us and charting our own.
Written by Fields and BBC/National Theatre writer Sophie McVeigh, and brought to life by Broken Frontier’s “Six to Watch, 2025” artist Shuning Ji, Cimarron is the first-ever graphic novel from Soi Books — and one of the most personal projects Dwayne has ever undertaken.
A Book Made from the Journey Itself
To honour that story, Soi Books is producing a limited Collector’s Edition. Hand-bound using original fabric from the Arctic tent that protected Dwayne on his North Pole expedition.
This isn’t just symbolism — it’s literal. The ripstop nylon that endured blizzards and sub-zero temperatures will now bind this story of resistance, transformation, and survival.

A Cultural Work of Legacy and Craft
Fields is more than an explorer. He’s a public figure, educator, and advocate for inclusion in adventure. A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, co-founder of the WeTwo Foundation, and the UK’s new Chief Scout (succeeding Bear Grylls), Dwayne’s work inspires a generation of young people who rarely see themselves in stories of the wild.
Cimarron is a story for those people. A work of fiction grounded in emotional truth — crafted, illustrated, and bound by hand.
It’s not a memoir. It’s a myth. A fable drawn from fire, frost, and freedom.
